BOYS SOCCER

George Washington 3, Woodrow Wilson 1

Michael Luechauer scored two goals against what had been a stone wall in front of Woodrow Wilson’s goal this season and it was the difference in a 3-1 George Washington victory Tuesday night at Paul Cline Stadium.

“He does stuff with a soccer ball that I’ve really not seen many people do, and I’ve had some really good players on my team and I’ve played against some really good players in this state,” George Washington coach Erik Engle said. “He’s a really unique. You don’t want to give him the ball in your defensive third on a bad pass.“

On the first tally goal he outran the the Woodrow defense and was able to beat Woodrow keeper Bryson Doss out in front of the goal to break the deadlock.

He did it again at the 12:27 mark of the second half on a near identical goal.

“He’s a very good player,” Woodrow Wilson coach Steve Laraba said. “And when you have a player like him complemented by players like C.J. Knapper and Wes Goodwin’s hard to keep up with and deal with three players like that.”

Going into the game Woodrow had not given up more than two goals and the Flying Eagles had shutouts in eight of their last 10 games.

The visiting Patriots had posted four straight shutouts before giving up a goal to Tyler Snyder with 6:41 left. That made it 2-1, but GW’s Wes Goodwin scored put away any intrigue with a goal 48 seconds later.

Woodrow had but two shots on goal in the game.

“Their defense is very well organized, and they attack the ball very well,” Laraba said. “We had a lot of trouble in the middle third of the field and when we got balls to our forwards it was a 4 v. 2 and we needed to get some more help to them.”

George Washington improved to 14-1-1. Woodrow Wilson fell to 9-3-2 and will return to the pitch when the Flying Eagles host Nicholas County at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
